#1 Reason You Are Not Close To God

Let’s face it at some point EVERY Christian comes to this big AHA moment when they want to grow closer to God.
This is most commonly referred to as the point you come to the end of yourself or have your first, cry out to Jesus moment.
It may not be so obvious as to how this is supposed to happen though.
You can go to church, read your Bible or at the very least get in a quick devotional, and still have this sense that no matter what you do you don’t feel any closer.
If you have ever felt yourself just wanting to scream at the top of your lungs, “Just tell me where to start," you are not alone.
You want to grow closer to God but where do you start?
You may start somewhere that’s obvious, like quiet reflection, until you realize that your life is far from quiet (with the exception of when you are sleeping, of course).
Then you might try something more structured, like a devotional or Bible study with a workbook and some video intros.
After all, if you just had clear task or action steps, there should be no reason why you wouldn’t be able to stick to it, right?
You try praying to God (nope), being prayed over, anointing oil, never missing church, a 365 day devotional. But, no matter what it is, you still don’t feel any closer.
What if, you have all wrong?
Think about it. When you want to grow closer to somebody do you read a book about their life, give them 5 minutes of your day (and not a minute longer), or how about lopsided conversations like, talking to them but never waiting for them to answer?
No, you don’t.
When you want to grow closer to someone, you make a decision to do life with them. Do life meaning:
- You answer their calls or auto reply, “I’ll call you right back.” (a quick devotional)
- You squeeze in time to talk and make arrangements to spend time together. (a Bible study)
- You can’t wait to hear what they have to say or the funny stories that they would tell. (commitment to a church body a.k.a. share God stories)
- You invite them over for dinner or pencil in a lunch date. (spend time with Jesus, the bread of life)
- If there is an emergency they are the first ones you run to or check up on and want to know if they are safe. (relationships both with God’s people and in the world)
The #1 reason you are not closer to God is because you are asking yourself the wrong question.
Check the list above and don’t ask yourself how you can feel closer to God.
Ask yourself, have I made time to do life with him?
Imagine how a small change to the question, will make a huge difference in how close you feel to God today?
Changing the question from, How can I feel closer to God? Vs. Am I doing life with God?
Here’s the secret sauce.
When you do life with him, you will get to know him and the more you know him, the closer you will feel to him.
He makes it easier than you think, so relax.
Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.
Jeremiah 29:12-13
Take Action: Choose just one thing from the list above that you can do right now, yes today.
Then add another one from the list and so on, until you know more and more about him each time you find him.
Love you in the Lord always,
